The people behind the National Lobster Hatchery
The National Lobster Hatchery has focussed upon recruiting some key members of staff to run the Charity on a daily basis, the team consists of the following people:
General Manager: Dom Boothroyd
Dom is responsible for the day to day management of the business, from raising the public profile of the charity, to writing research proposals and lending a hand in the hatchery. Dom was born and raised in North Cornwall, gained an Honours Degree in Fisheries and Ocean Science, a Masters Degree in Fish Biology, and then worked in Aquaculture for a few years before working in the ornamental industry and eventually public Aquaria. Before coming to the NLH Dom was the Curator of the Aquaria at the World famous Burj al Arab Hotel in Dubai. |
Senior Hatchery Technician: Colin Wells
Colin graduated from the University of Portsmouth and then moved to Plymouth in 2000 to undertake an MRes in Applied Fish Biology. Colin then ran research projects for the National Marine Aquarium for four years before he joined the Lobster Hatchery team in 2005.

Researcher: Jake Scolding
Jake joined the team late 2008 following the completion of his Master Degree in Shellfish Biology from the University of Bangor. Jake brings an enormous amount of enthusiasm, dedication and experience of fisheries and fisheries science, to his post, as well as his publishing skills to the hatchery team.
Jake is developing disinfection protocols for lobster larval culture, his post is part funded by the ESF funded UCP programme and was set up through a contract by University of Wales Swansea. |
PhD Student: Carly Daniels
Carly has been on the hatchery team since 2004 when she joined us as a student to undertake her graduate project. Carly then stayed with the team as a research technician and has been the driving force behind much of the hatcheries research work. Carly is currently studying full time at the Hatchery for her PhD which is funded by the Hatchery, the Great Western Research Fund, the Fishmongers Company and the University of Plymouth. |
Financial Assistant & Website Coordinator: Sarah Boothroyd
Sarah used to work at the University of Plymouth managing budgets up to £8 million on European Funding projects, supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs. She has worked in administration and finance for years; on fish farms, the aquatic trade even an Endangered Breeding Centre for Arabian Wildlife in Dubai. |
Hatchery Technician: Charlie Ellis
Charlie first joined the Hatchery for his degree project looking at live feed disinfection protocols to improve larval survival and gained a first class honours degree. Following his graduation Charlie volunteered for 6 months before he was contracted for a six month research post, to encourage industry participation in our stock enhancement programme and to develop a release mechanism for the deployment of lobsters. On completion of the project Charlie took the opportunity for some time out and travelled around the world. A year later Charlie is our latest recruit as Hatchery Technician and returned in April this year.

Public Education Assistant: Anne Crossley
Anne has been a very successful business woman and is locally known for her charm when she was landlady of the 'Ring of Bells' in St Issey, that went on to win the Pub of the Year. She has brought fresh ideas and great enthusiasm to the Visitor Centre. |
Public Education Assistant: Kathryn Harman

Kathryn joined the team in 2007, a friendly face in the Visitor Centre. She worked for the RSPB for six years focusing on marketing and logicstics for the charity, followed by over 20 years career of nursing. |
