South West Water supporting Cornish lobsters

Published on: 01/03/2010

sww.jpgThe National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow are steadily preparing for the new season of berried hens (egg bearing female lobsters).  In recent years the season has started as early as February (due to the warmer winters) so it’ll be interesting to see when we start seeing berried hens this year, after the cold spell we’ve just had.

The winter is quiet for us for visitors and lobsters but it’s never a dull moment.  We have had success in getting another PhD that started in October, continuing our research on the effects of ocean acidification on juvenile lobsters.  We’re running two oyster depuration trials, continuing our research on lobster nutrition through another PhD and approaching the end of a Framework 7 research project.  Last week we have had confirmation of funding for a one year project that will allow us to employ a Volunteer Coordinator, who will be able to build on our volunteers programme.  As a charity we are lucky to attract a lot of volunteers that are passionate about marine life, some of whom have become our longest standing members of staff at the hatchery!

South West Water has confirmed their support for the Lobster Hatchery and has signed up as a Corporate Sponsor.  Revenue grants are often the hardest funding to attract, yet often the most effective way of supporting a project of this nature.

South West Water has made substantial investment in environmental improvements in recent years.  This extensive programme of environmental improvement now means the South West has some of the finest bathing waters in Europe and clean rivers with stunning wildlife.  Their current business plan highlights their drive to lead on sustainability by specifically addressing the issue of climate change with investment in championing low energy, low carbon solutions, water conservation and innovative ways of responding to climate change.
