Welcome to the National Lobster Hatchery

This website aims to provide you with all you need
to know about the National Lobster Hatchery (NLH), whether you are
planning to visit us in Padstow, use our conference or education
facilities, or if you would like to know more about our important
conservation and research work.
Our Vision: To actively
promote and contribute to responsible management of coastal marine
resources and to act as a resource for education, conservation and
research.
Our
Work: At the heart of the NLH’s work is our
lobster restocking project. Local fishermen bring “pregnant”
female lobsters in to us, to give them a chance to release their
delicate offspring in captivity, where there are no predators. The
young lobsters are then raised to a size where they can be released
back into the sea and look after themselves. Unlike most marine
biology labs our work is on view for anybody coming to our visitor
centre.
Our Mission: "To promote the concept of sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture and to improve the long term productivity of the lobster fishery for all, through an active stock enhancement programme".
As we are a charity, we rely upon our admission
fees and shop sales from our visitor centre, company sponsorship,
public and private funding, and donations. With your help, we will
be able to further invest in our ongoing conservation programme
