Charlotte Preston, Volunteering at the Hatchery Charlotte Preston started volunteering with us last year to gain relevant work experience, having graduated from an Environmental Tourism & Sustainability degree. We have been able to offer her paid work through the Access to Work Scheme to support a member of staff in the hatchery.

She has been doing mirco-biological analysis of lobster larvae & water samples and morphometric analysis of larvae & juveniles for our Framework 7 Research project. She has also gained practical experience of husbandry techniques and the life support systems within the hatchery.

Of course the Lobster Hatchery has a direct impact on tourism because if the Cornish fishery becomes unsustainable, the fishermen will not be actively fishing or using the harbours, the harbours will not be maintained, the seafood restaurants, fishmongers, fish markets and crab shacks will have no produce; and what do people come to Cornwall for? They want to have a crab sandwich for lunch, freshly cooked seafood in a restaurant over looking the sea, they want to walk around the cute little cornish harbours and watch the fishing boats come in.

Volunteers

Do you need relevant experience to progress your career, or do you have some spare time on your hands and want to make a difference?"

We welcome volunteers to work as part of our dedicated team at the hatchery or the visitor centre, particularly during our busy season, between April and October.

We have volunteering positions available for Assistant Hatchery Technicians, Visitor Centre Assistants, Admin Assistants and fundraisers.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact Dom Boothroyd by telephone on 01841 533877 or by email on info@nationallobsterhatchery.co.uk.

PLEASE NOTE: because it takes several weeks to learn the skills required to undertake even the most basic tasks in the hatchery, we would advise that the minimum period that would be beneficial to ourselves and you, our volunteers, is four weeks full time or two months part time. Also, if you live locally and are able to give up a morning, afternoon or even a day or two a week, we would welcome long term committed individuals who want to help out.

IN PARTICULAR, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS NOW TO HELP AT WEEKENDS IN THE HATCHERY - May 2011.

We look forward to hearing from you!
