Education Blog – January 2017

During the winter months the cool sea water temperatures usually mean that we have fewer berried hens (lady lobsters holding a clutch of eggs beneath their tails) being bought in to us by local fishermen. This year however numbers are up on the average, with a consequently bumper clutch of brand new larvae hatching in the first week of January!

We have also released the first cohort of lobsters for 2017. Six hundred little lobsters were set free by Cornish Divers around Pendennis Point in Falmouth.

It is award season at the moment, with team lobster nominated as finalists in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards! We have also been nominated for national Visit England Awards. These are in addition to recently being recognised with a Trip Adviser Certificate of Excellence in August 2016. A large factor in these nominations has been the team’s very high scores for our “Meet the Expert” tours – a unique opportunity for members of the public to go behind the scenes with our resident marine biologist, and get up close and personal with lobsters at different life stages. These exclusive tours make an excellent gift for people visiting Padstow, and are available by advance booking only. Get yours in the Hatchery or online from the Admissions page.
