Education Blog March 2016

listeningSpring is here on the Camel estuary! The winter storms have abated and the sun is shining on the National Lobster Hatchery. Following on from our big refit a few months ago, we now have lots of lobster ladies laden with eggs on our Maternity ward, and baby lobsters in all stages of development. It won’t be long now until the first hatchlings of the year are ready for release!

To showcase our little lobsters we were delighted to be invited to join a host of 50 local farmers and food producers at the Farm and Country days, held at Royal Cornwall Showground. Over 1,500 school children from 60 primary schools spread across the county joined us to play our fun fishing game, learn about lovely lobsters, practice fishy classification and learn about fisheries management through hands-on, engaging activities.

As well as being a fun way to teach a lot of 7-9 year olds about our work, the days were also a great way of crash-testing some of the new educational resources that we’ve been developing over the winter months – all received with great success and abundant enthusiasm from the kids!
