Education Blog October 2016

Despite fewer people visiting Padstow at this time of year there is no slowing down for the education programme at Team Lobster! We have recently hosted University groups at the hatchery, visited school classes, and taken part in a big event.

The team took our lobster lessons into school for year 6 children at Penryn Primary Academy, to deliver lessons on a new topic – evolution. Children met different stages of larval lobster to learn about survival strategies in the sea, and produced some excellent work in preparation for their lobster lessons. They asked some fantastic questions and were a pleasure to teach.

We hosted an excellent group from the top of the educational spectrum – MSc Marine Conservation and Biology from University of Exeter. Students were attentive and engaged, and kept us on our toes with their questions about global fisheries, aquaculture and conservation.

Lobster work Cute kid with S1 cubeAs part of the Great Cornish Food and Drink Festival in Truro we exhibited baby lobsters and spoke to visiting school groups about how to identify Cornish fish and played games relating to fisheries management. The event provided the opportunity to outreach to 37,500 people over the course of a long weekend, and being surrounded by a host of excellent Cornish food producers kept our taste buds tingling throughout!
